About Nicholas Brisbon
I am a research psychologist and a Licensed Mental Health Counselor in Massachusetts and Rhode Island, with over two decades of experience working with adults in a range of clinical settings. My main clinical specialties are in addiction, men’s issues, anxiety, depression, stress, anger management, life transitions, and spiritual concerns. I earned a master’s degree in Clinical Psychology at Springfield College in 2008 and a PhD in Social/Cognitive Psychology at Brandeis University in 2016. My academic research has focused on the concept of mindfulness and how meditation and prayer can affect stress, sleep quality, and problems with memory.
I’ve worked in the mental health field in some capacity since 2005. I got my start in Northampton, MA as a counselor supporting those suffering from severe mental illness on an outreach-basis throughout the community. After earning a master’s degree, I provided psychiatric crisis evaluations in clinic and emergency department settings, while also providing case management and outpatient counseling in a crisis stabilization unit. Since completing the Ph.D., I’ve continued work in psychiatric emergency care in the emergency department at Boston Medical Center and also as an outpatient counselor for an intensive residential addiction treatment program on Penikese Island off of Cape Cod. I recently opened a private practice here in Swansea, MA with plans to expand my work into consulting and teaching in the near future.
In addition to my clinical work, I have been a data scientist at both Mass General Brigham in Boston, MA and at IQVIA, a large international contract research organization. At Mass General Brigham, I conducted clinical research on patient quality of care and also contributed to several studies and peer-reviewed publications investigating patient care in emergency departments, medication-assisted treatment for opioid use disorder, and risk factors for and hospitalization with COVID-19. At IQVIA, I developed productionized statistical methodologies and conducted research within the pharmaceutical and medical technology fields.
I live in Rhode Island with my family. When I’m not working or spending time with them, I enjoy boating, playing guitar, going to concerts, riding motorcycles, and the occasional video game.
